Camomile oral sprays: traditional uses and how to choose

Camomile oral sprays: traditional uses and how to choose

Camomile (or chamomile — same plant, two spellings) has a long history of traditional use for the mouth and throat. In Europe, camomile-based oral sprays have been a household staple for generations.

This guide explains what camomile oral sprays are, how they’re typically used, and what to consider when choosing between AmpaVit’s herbal throat-spray options.

This page is for general information only. It is not medical advice. If you have a persistent sore throat, mouth ulcer, dental problem or any other concern that doesn’t settle, please see a qualified healthcare professional.

A short note on the plant

“Camomile” is the UK spelling; “chamomile” is the US / international spelling. Both refer to plants of the same family. Two species are usually meant:

  • Matricaria recutita — German camomile, the most common ingredient in oral and digestive preparations.
  • Chamaemelum nobile — Roman camomile, more often used in essential oils and skincare.

Both have been used in traditional European and Mediterranean herbal medicine for centuries.

What camomile oral sprays are for

A camomile oral spray is a small pump-action bottle (usually 15–20 ml) of camomile extract in a water/alcohol base, delivered as a fine spray onto the mouth or throat. Common reasons people keep one to hand:

  • After dental procedures (dental aftercare) — camomile-based oral preparations have a long traditional history of use for general mouth comfort following dental work.
  • General sore throat comfort — a traditional camomile use.
  • Mouth-ulcer area — applied directly to the affected spot.
  • Daily oral routine — used alongside (not instead of) regular brushing and flossing.

None of the above is a claim that camomile treats any of these conditions in the medical sense. They are descriptions of traditional use. If a problem persists, see your dentist, pharmacist or doctor.

How they’re typically used

The directions on the manufacturer pack are the definitive guide. The general pattern:

  • 2–3 pumps onto the affected area (back of the throat, the gums, the lining of the mouth, or a specific sore spot)
  • Several times a day, as needed
  • Some people spray and swallow; others spray and rinse out gargle-style before swallowing

Always follow the directions on the pack and the advice of your pharmacist or dentist.

Choosing between AmpaVit’s two herbal throat sprays

We stock two complementary camomile-based options:

Kamillosan®M Throat Spray (15 ml)

A single-herb camomile spray (Matricaria recutita extract) — the simpler, longer-established formulation. A good choice if you specifically want a camomile-only spray, or you’ve used it before in Europe. 15 ml — compact and travel-friendly.

See Kamillosan®M Throat Spray

Chamo-Lico Mouth Spray (20 ml)

A multi-herbal spray combining camomile with propolis (bee resin), elderberry, peppermint, clove and licorice (the “Lico” in Chamo-Lico). A broader herbal blend in a slightly larger 20 ml bottle. Contains honey as a natural sweetener — see note below.

See Chamo-Lico Mouth Spray

Stronger antiseptic option

If a clinician (e.g. a dentist) has recommended a stronger antiseptic preparation rather than a herbal spray:

Betadine Antiseptic Solution (30 ml) — for stronger antiseptic mouth/throat use under healthcare guidance.

A note on honey (Chamo-Lico)

Chamo-Lico contains honey as a natural sweetener. Two things to know:

  • The label says “sugar-free” — meaning no added refined sugars. Honey naturally contains fructose and glucose, so people monitoring their sugar intake (e.g. for diabetes management) should bear this in mind.
  • Honey is not recommended for children under one year.

Kamillosan®M does not contain honey.
